New protests in support for the National Anti-corruption Directorate in Bucharest, countrywide

New protests have been staged in Bucharest and other Romanian cities on Sunday evening, for the 35th day. This time people took to the streets to defend democracy and to ask for the institutions to be depoliticised.

Several thousands joined a rally in support for the National Anti-corruption Directorate in Bucharest. People gathered in Victoria Square at 6 p.m. where they also raised signatures for holding a referendum to sack Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea and shared badges with the famous slogan „#resist”.

The crown chanted „Resignation”, „DNA should come and take you”, „Romania asks for no pardon”.

After that, protesters have blocked Unirii Square on their way to the Palace of Parliament, while they kept a moment of silence in Universitate Square.

Some sources said there were about 3,000 protesters, others claimed there were 4,000 of them.

The protest was initiated on Facebook, with the page of the event being called “We support DNA, we want CCR depoliticised.

Similar rallies took place in other cities in the country, such as Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Iași, Brasov, Galati or Ramnicu Valcea.

Protests were also staged abroad by the Romanians living in Diaspora. Protests were reported from Paris, Bologna, Milan or Vienna.
